The fantastic U16s topped off a great week of defensive training with a convincing 3-2 victory over a strong Belles side at Mabley Green on the 26th September. Nelly took on a new role as a deeper lying central midfielder and produced a standout performance¬† regaining possession from the Belles attack and sweeping the ball confidently up to the target players in the Limehouse attacking line. One of these target players was Julia, Limehouse’s agile left winger, who was also tested in a new position on the field as a striker up top. Julia’s work as the striker paid off with a fantastically taken goal. Latching onto a through ball from the wings and calmly taking it past the centre back, Julia fired the ball into the back of the net with accuracy and power. 1-0 to the Laces and an eruption of celebration from the sidelines as Julia rightly claimed her first goal of the campaign. Manni, a talented outfield player who heroically took charge of the goalie gloves for the team in the first half in the absence of a regular goalkeeper, produced some fine saves to keep the ball out of the Limehouse net and keep it at 1-0. When she took her goalie gloves off for the second half she had an immediate impact on the field, scoring Limehouse’s second goal shortly after the break. U16s captain Hannah showed her leadership quality once again, producing another solid defensive display with Emily at the back, who muscled the Belles attackers off the ball and deny then opportunities to shoot. In a game of outstanding performances all round, Anouk showed just how much she has developed as a player by calming and quickly distributing the ball up to the target players with precision. Two players made their debuts for the Laces – Millie and Arianna – and it was a pleasure to get them on the field. Millie, who sat in the central midfield while Nelly took over in goal for part of the second half and played fantastically in an unfamiliar role, preventing the attackers once again getting into the Limehouse box. Arianna played excellently at left back showing her athleticism and energy throughout her debut. The Belles got a goal back to make it 2-1 after a quick counter, but a great bit of play down the right by Beattie, who after beating two players for speed and skill, cut the ball back to Manni who completed her brace with a firm first time finish. A dubious penalty late in the game got a goal back for a hardworking Belles side but it was another great team performance from Limehouse that earned them the 3 points.

Girl of the Game was a wipeout – Ella – the Club’s skillful right winger – who showed strength, speed and determination to keep battling both in attack and defence showed her impressive quality as a fine midfielder and an invaluable asset to the team. The team’s all round performance, humility and their reputation for upholding the values of the club made the win worth it even more.

With every game the girls get stronger both on and off the field and winning was a fantastic end to a great week for the girls. Well done to Ella for girl of the game, Julia for her first goal of the season and Manni for her performance in goal and the brace! Next week the girls are home to Islington Borough. PS Arianna loved the game so much she accidentally took her bib home.
